Home Insurance in New Jersey

What Does Home Insurance Cover?

When you purchase a home in the Tri-State area that is financed, your lender will require you to have home insurance to cover any damages that may occur to the dwelling so they can be repaired. Home insurance also has other portions to protect your personal belongings, and it adds a layer of liability insurance in case someone is hurt on your property.

Dwelling Coverage

Your home insurance policy covers damages to your home if it is damaged by hail, fire, lightning, or other weather-related disasters that are listed in your specific policy. It also covers attached items to your home, such as a garage, a deck, or porch. It can also include your fencing, a tool shed, and a gazebo or arbor that is on your property. The insurance company will pay to repair items or replace them in the case of a total loss of your items. This portion of a home policy covers your trees, shrubs, and plants on your property.

Personal Belongings Coverage

Your home policy also covers all of your personal belongings that are located inside of your home. This includes furniture, clothes, and every item you have inside your home that may be damaged or destroyed by fire or another covered disaster, and it also covers theft of your personal items. The personal belongings coverage will also include your items that are stored elsewhere than at your home. If you have expensive items, such as jewelry or collector's items, you may need to purchase additional coverage for them to be covered in full.

Personal Liability Coverage

This portion of a home policy will pay to another person if they are hurt on your property or if they have property damages that you cause them. It will pay for medical bills associated with injuries to another person, and it will also cover your legal expenses if you are sued for an accident that you caused.

Additional Living Expenses Coverage

If your home is uninhabitable due to damages that are covered in your policy, your additional living expenses coverage in the Tri-State area will pay for your extra expenses while your home is being repaired. This includes a hotel for shelter, food, and other costs associated with not being able to reside in your home.
